after tonites debate - come to the queer underground - all are welcome!

Parents upset over school photo display
Eugene (KMTR) - A photographic display at a Eugene school is causing controversy, and there's a meeting Thursday night to talk about it.

The display is up at Buena Vista-Meadowlark Elementary school is part of a traveling photo project put together by the Community Alliance for Lane County (CALC).

Some parents are upset about a photo of a transgender person which depicts a woman who is mixed race, with a slight beard. A short written biography of the woman that appears with the picture uses the word "queer." The objecting parents say it introduces an adult subject—sexuality—they don't think is appropriate for younger students.

The school’s principal, BJ Blake, says the display is supposed to expose students to pictures of people of mixed racial and ethnic backgrounds, like many of the students. Blake says she's not teaching kids about sex.

“When we talk about the photo, it's going to be only in the area of respect. And if you see that word, that word is never to be used to hurt, that word is never to be used to label, that word is never to be used to discriminate or harm anybody,” Blake said.

Some parents have written letters to the school. They say their children ask questions and they don't think a person can use the word “queer” in reference to a transgendered person, without talking about sex. Those parents think they are the ones who should bring that discussion up with their own children when they think their children are old enough to understand.
But other parents don't have a problem with the photo. They think personal bias is the problem.

Clark Barry, the parent of a first-grader, says parents like him have “concern for the innocence of their children. Are they ready for these discussions yet? They're still learning their ABC's, they're still learning how to spell, now we're going to bring in gender identification and chromosomes and a lot of other things that take us deep, deep, deep into philosophical debates.”

Another first-grade parent, Amanda Bowden-Gil, says, “It all comes down to educating our children and not discriminating and being open minded and lacking prejudice in general.”

The photos have been taken down and the captions are being revised to make the wording more relatable for elementary school students. But Blake says the photos will go back up and the word "queer" is expected to stay.

The meeting with parents is scheduled for Thursday night, May 21st at 6:00 p.m. at the school at 1500 Queens Way, off Cal Young Road in Eugene.

The Lane Educational Service District says the display will eventually circulate through other elementary schools in Lane County.

Anti-Racist Training For White Women

Saturday afternoon around 2:30 pm, Ffiona Morgan will be giving a l-l/2 hr. workshop, entitled Anti-Racist Training For White Women.
This workshop will integrate the experiences of individual group members with feedback from the Presenter and others in the group. Presenter will also give an introduction and lead a release ritual at the end of the workshop
For more information, please call 654-0424

This is a free workshop that has been of great benefit in the past when it was scheduled at various venues.

Information on the Conference
Beyond Patriarchy 2009 Vision Statement
Beyond Patriarchy is a gathering intended to provide information, support, and healing surrounding all forms of oppression through a radical and feminist perspective. Patriarchy is a system of domination which privileges masculinity and enforces strict, exclusive, and unequal gender roles, and which interlocks with racism, homophobia, transphobia, ablism, xenophobia, and all other forms of oppression. Patriarchy affects people of all genders in our interpersonal relationships and everyday lives. As a community, we must work to see beyond dualities, dismantle hierarchies, and engage in multi-issue organizing that creates radical and liberating change for all of us.
Beyond Patriarchy 2009 will:
(1) explore the roots and legacies of patriarchy;
(2) seek solutions to anti-body, anti-woman, anti-color, anti-queer, and anti-nature systems of violence and entitlement that harm all of us;
(3) create a space for healing and growth.
Towards those ends, Beyond Patriarchy 2009 will serve as open space:
a) to build awareness of issues surrounding the many forms of patriarchy;
b) to facilitate inspiration for how our growing communities can organize resistance;
c) to squash the dominating theory, generating new insight and dialogue within an ever-growing conversation regarding oppression of womyn, of men, and of people who are gender-variant;
d) to take an intersectional approach to anti-oppression politics, thereby building solidarity among movements;
e) to examine how our daily lives are affected by patriarchy; and
f) wherein all beings come together to heal wounds and build community support.

Batwoman, the red-headed lesbian, is unleashed at last

As Bruce Wayne's future remains in doubt, comic book unveils a 'successor'
By Guy Adams in Los Angeles

Wednesday, 11 February 2009

Holy sexuality, Batman!

Two months after his untimely death, the creators of Gotham City's crime-fighting superhero, Bruce Wayne, have finally unveiled his politically-correct replacement: a ginger-haired, lesbian socialite called Batwoman.

The publisher of Detective Comics, the iconic title which for 60 years has revolved around the recently-deceased Wayne, revealed this week that future editions of the comic book will star his long-standing female counterpart, whose real name is Kathy Kane.

Described as "a lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night", Batwoman will be the subject of at least 12 issues. It will be the most high-profile appearance by a gay superhero in any book published by the legendary DC Comics.

As her alter-ego, Batwoman, Ms Kane wears knee-high red stiletto boots and a figure-hugging black outfit. Two years ago, she made headlines when it emerged that she was the ex-lover of Renee Montoya, a Gotham City police detective.

Although Kane has enjoyed only fleeting appearances in Batman comics since being "outed", writer Greg Rucka – who is in charge of this summer's run of Detective Comics – said Bruce Wayne's apparent death had provided the perfect opportunity to make her the subject of his prestigious series.

"We have been waiting to unlock her. It's long overdue," he said in an interview with the Comic Book Resources website. "Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue. That's certainly not mine."

The news represents a significant cultural landmark for the gay rights movement, and follows a concerted effort by DC Comics to introduce more characters from ethnic and sexual minorities. However, Rucka hopes that the new titles, which are due to be released in June, will not be overshadowed by controversy about Kane's sexuality.

"I think there is going to be some media," he said. "I can't control it. You've got to remember, Wonder Woman got a haircut and that became news. So it will be what it is."

"My job is to write the best book I can, about a character that I think is exceptionally cool, that J.H. Williams [his co-writer and artist] thinks is exceptionally cool, that DC Comics thinks is exceptionally cool and worthy of being the lead player in Detective Comics," he added. "Frankly, she should be judged on her merits."

The last episode of Detective Comics ended with Batman's millionaire alter-ego Bruce Wayne being ejected from a speeding aircraft without his famous cape and face-mask.

He is now presumed dead (although it is an unwritten rule of comics that superheroes can always be reincarnated) and Mr Rucka said future editions will revolve around a selection of potential heirs, including Batwoman, Catwoman and Bruce Wayne's purported son, Damien, fighting to succeed him.

This Explains Alot...

Batman to Be Replaced by Lesbian Counterpart

by Tom Radler

Feb 12th 2009

Crime-fighters come in many shapes and sizes, but until now they didn't come in the woman-seeking-woman variety.

DC Comics, however, is spotlighting a red-headed lesbian to take over for erstwhile Batman Bruce Wayne -- who suffered apparently fatal injuries in a recent issue of the Batman series.

Batwoman, whose daytime persona is Katherine "Kate" Kane, is described as "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night," and she's due to star in the series for at least twelve issues, beginning in June.

The Batwoman character was first introduced in 1956 as a possible love interest for Batman. She didn't come out as a lesbian until 2006, after it was revealed that she was the ex-lover of a female police detective.

Given the predominantly male readership of comic books, we wonder what factors played into DC's decision to put Batwoman in the lead.

Questions Raised: Is the sexual orientation of comic book heroes relevant? Will this effort for diversification lead to different stories that straight-male Batman couldn't provide?

Girls Aloud still in the headlines on craigslist

From a Craigslist Ad Eugene W4W Forum regarding Girls Aloud vs. HotFlash
http://eugene.craigslist.org/w4w/
LEAVE IT ALONE ALREADY

I have not wanted to get involved in arguments about the dances, as I do not think it serves the higher good. I will say a few things now, but I will not post about it again, so if you are looking for a debate...have kids or something!

No one event, or group, is going to serve everyone. Nor is everyone wanting to go to every event. This is a very difficult community of women to serve. I am thrilled that Girls Aloud is stepping up to the plate with something different. So they aren't perfect and have made mistakes....who is or hasn't???

The more events, the more we will be out getting to know each other, coming together celebrating. Hot Flash felt very exclusive & clique, to me. I disliked the music and rarely had a good time, as I didn't know folks. I only went when I felt desperate for community, and usually left feeling the same. Club Pynk is more fun, but has chosen a location that has a reputation for being unsafe for women. I stopped going to John Henry's years ago because of negative energy & being attacked on the dance floor by college boys. Though I tried Pynk a couple of times; I won't support JH anymore.

I will continue to support Girls Aloud. I like the music & have always loved the venue. I find people more open & friendly & am making new friends quickly. That their prices are lower is thoughtful & more inclusive, as they understand that we don't make as much here as in PDX. Also cool that they are giving back to our community with the food drive. I hope Girls Aloud has dances twice a month, as I would attend every time!

Stop thinking like minimalists & embrace abundance consciousness! Realize the more events there are, the better off we all are, whether they are on the same night or not. Our community can support it! But this back biting and "us vs. them" attitude is most harmful. Please stop attacking each other!

Be the change you want to see and help create a loving, inclusive woman's community in Eugene.
====================================================================
Well said.
And I want to state for the record that we were not intending to be in direct competition w/ HotFlash on Valentines Day.
We hoped that with only a one hour overlap there wouldnt be any hurt feelings.

We at Girls Aloud focus on our community its needs as we see them. We feel there is enough room for everyone and for even more!

as always - peace - love - and freedom!

By KVAL.com Staff
EUGENE, Ore. -- While the 10-year-old boy who survived Eugene's deadliest car crash in memory recovers in Portland, his supporters plan to have a pizza party in his honor today.
Jakobi Mulgrave, 10, survived the Jan. 21 crash that killed 4 people, including his mother.

The driver of one of the vehicles faces four counts of manslaughter and other charges, and Jakobi's father filed a lawsuit on his son's behalf against the driver of the car, the car's owner and two establishments where the plaintiff says the driver consumed alcohol before the crash.
Supporters plan a vaeriety of fundraisers for Jakobi, including an event Wednesday at area Papa's Pizza restaurants.

The fundraiser requires boosters to download a flier and submit it with their purchase.
As extra incentive, the two businesses that purchase the most pizza Wednesday for employees will be eligible for a $100 gift card to Oregon Electric Station or Sixth Street Grill, according the Jaclyn Moore, fundraising coordinator.

Moore said businesses must write their business name on the flier. She said it would take about a week to determine the winners and present the gift cards.

from the register guard regarding Former Commish Green's DUII....

"Kletzok declined to disclose Green’s blood-alcohol content at the time of his arrest, citing state law governing the release of information gathered during criminal investigations."

Huh? How come I knew Matthew Elmers B.A.L. hours after he made his Register Guard debut for the now infamous West 11th massacre?

Am I missing something?

Green charged with DUII

He admits making a serious error in judgment and apologizes

Published: Feb 6, 2009 11:15PM

Former Lane County Commissioner Bobby Green was arrested Thursday night in Eugene on a misdemeanor drunken-driving charge, police said Friday.

A Eugene police officer stopped Green’s Chevy Blazer on Echo Hollow Road in west Eugene at 11:31 p.m. after seeing the vehicle stray from its traffic lane, police department spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said.

The officer conducted a field-sobriety test and determined that Green, 54, was intoxicated, Kletzok said.

The officer transported Green to Eugene City Hall, where further testing was done, Kletzok said.

Green was cited on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and failure to drive within a lane, and later released from police custody. He was not taken to jail.

“He was treated just like anybody else” arrested on a drunken-driving charge, Kletzok said.

Green was ordered to appear in Eugene Municipal Court on the charges on Feb. 19.

Kletzok said Green was “very compliant” when he was taken into custody. Green was alone in the Blazer when he was pulled over, Kletzok said.

Green, who served 13 years as the county’s north Eugene commissioner before being narrowly defeated in last November’s election by Rob Handy, spoke briefly about his arrest when contacted Friday by The Register-Guard.

“I acknowledge I made a serious error in judgment and one that I will learn from,” he said, adding that he has apologized to his family, friends and other community members. “I now ask that our privacy be respected as we deal with this matter.”

Kletzok declined to disclose Green’s blood-alcohol content at the time of his arrest, citing state law governing the release of information gathered during criminal investigations.

After losing his commissioner seat, Green was hired last month to work as a lobbyist for the Salem-based Association of Oregon Community Mental Health Programs.

The nonprofit organization represents agencies from around the state that provide addiction treatment services and programs for developmentally disabled and mentally ill people.

Friggin drunks. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

A friend got stabbed last night trying to 86 a drunk from a local watering hole.

He was doing his job. And for his hard work he was rewarded with multiple lacerations, a night in the hospital, and a worker comp form (827) to process. Sheesh and on a Tuesday no less!

Big Strong Girlfriend and I almost went to that pub last night. We most likely wouldve been playing pool with my bouncer friend's girlfriend.

What the hell? Why the violence? Why?

Friggin old batty loony ugly dumbass good for nothing loser drunks.

HoPe U gEt HuMpEd ToDaY

Sure cuz its Wednesday. Or perhaps you just need to get laid. Either way I hope you score.

Like that new graphic? My friend Colleen did that up for me. I love it!

I broke my new years resolution today. I swore off the yummy hashbrowns from the hospital cafeteria. 28 days is pretty good. I'm going to allow myself the crunchy goodness once a month.

See? I like to compromise - not BE compromised. I dont like to be put into compromising positions - to which currently I am in a few!

But there aint anything I can do about any of them. And none of them are that important anyhow. They dont stop me from waking up each day happy as hell - being a productive, employed member of society - doing right by myself and those I love (which is many!) - and hitting the hay every night lucky to be alive.

So this is how it'll work....You'll come into The Broadway and complete your registration. I need everyone to email me how they want to be contacted - phone/email or both sooner rather than later please! You'll confirm your contact information and collect your QSD number and booklet. Each date will last three minutes. Once the bell rings everyone will move to their next seat. (volunteers will assist you if you lose your way) :O)

If you are interested in your date - you'll write her QSD number in your booklet. At the end of the night you'll return the booklets to the registration. Matches are mutual - and this is a numbers game ladies! I'll contact you by Friday at 10 a.m. with your matches.

Questions? Email me! Email me anyways w/ your contact info! Hooray!
love and peace
